Our Clergy


Holy Ascension Orthodox Christian Mission is a part of the Diocese of Australia and New Zealand (within the R.ussian Orthodox Church Outside R.ussia). Our ruling bishop is Metropolitan Hilarion (who is both First Hierarch of R..O..C..O..R and Archbishop of Australia & New Zealand), and he is assisted by Bishop George of Canberra.

Holy Ascension Orthodox Mission's Ruling Hierarch

Metropolitan Hilarion of Eastern America and New York, and Archbishop of Sydney, Australia & New Zealand. First Hierarch of the R.ussian Orthodox Church Outside of R.ussia.


Metropolitan Hilarion was born on January 6, 1948, in Spirit River, Alberta, Canada of Ukrainian parents. Igor, the future Metropolitan, was the youngest of 7 children. In 1966, he found a spiritual director, Bishop Sava (Saracevic) of Edmonton, a Serb who greatly revered St John (Maximovitch, +1966).

Bishop George

His Grace Bishop George is the Bishop of Canberra, and the vicar bishop of the Diocese of Australia and New Zealand of the R.ussian Orthodox Church Outside of R.ussia. Paul Schaefer was born on May 25, 1950, in Belleville, Illinois, to Francis and Claire Schaefer, a devout Roman Catholic family. He graduated from Catholic High School in 1968 and then attended Southern Illinois University from 1968 to 1972. After graduating, he saw problems in the Roman Catholic church; he stopped attending services and began to search for the truth, including in Buddhist and other eastern sources.

Priestmonk Kyril

Fr Kyril graduated with a Bachelor of Theology in 2005 from St Andrew's Greek Orthodox Theological College, NSW, which is a member institute of the Sydney College of Divinity. In July 2006 he was tonsured a stavrophore monk and ordained to the priesthood by His Eminence, Metropolitan Hilarion, First Hierarch of the R.ussian Orthodox Church Outside of R.ussia (at the time Archbishop of Sydney, Australia & New Zealand). Fr Kyril has been specifically involved in mission and outreach to the Australian society at large.  With the blessing of his ruling hierarch, Metropolitan Hilarion (Ukase No. 6  3a, 4 June 2009), Fr Kyril along with Deacon Emil Mishriky were given the duty and responsibility to establish Holy Ascension Orthodox Christian Mission: A Canonical Orthodox Christian missionary community whose purpose it is to serve people of all backgrounds via various public, social and benevolent projects and conduct all liturgical services in modern English.

Deacon Emil

Deacon Emil Mishriky, was originally of the Coptic church. He was received into Eastern Orthodoxy, and ordained to the diaconate by His Eminence Metropolitan Hilarion in 2008. He has been closely involved in serving with Priestmonk Kyril with regard to mission and outreach activities. He has been a co-founder of Holy Ascension Orthodox Christian Mission along with Fr Kyril in June of 2009. Deacon Fr Emil is married and has two children. As a married deacon in the Orthodox Church and as part of Holy Ascension Mission, which has the capacity for both married and monastic clergy, Fr Emil is in a special position to serve the needs of families and the youth in particular. Fr Emil graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Technology and has a background in retail sales. He also has been involved in various athletic activities in the community, particularly in the martial arts. He is currently interested in cultivating skills as a wood-craftsman especially in creating ecclesiastical furniture.
